Description

A collection of octavo-format hardcover books from the Wizard of Oz series, comprising eight volumes. The group includes titles by L. Frank Baum: Rinkitink in Oz, The Tin Woodman of Oz, and The Land of Oz (a sequel to The Wizard of Oz). Also included are titles by Ruth Plumly Thompson: Ozoplaning with the Wizard of Oz, The Giant Horse of Oz, The Yellow Knight of Oz, Captain Salt in Oz, and Silver Princess in Oz. All volumes are published by Reilly & Lee and illustrated by John R. Neill, featuring both black-and-white and color-wash plates throughout. The volumes are bound in original pictorial cloth or paper-covered boards. Notable internal markings include a hand-colored title page in The Tin Woodman of Oz and a child’s ownership inscription in one volume reading “THIS BOOK BELONGS To Wendy N.” with an accompanying sketch. Several spines show the Reilly & Lee imprint.

Condition report:

Fair to good condition. The collection exhibits significant shelf wear, including heavy rubbing, soiling, and edge fraying to the covers. Most volumes have extensive repairs to the spines using tan paper tape, which in some cases completely covers the original spine material. The Land of Oz shows a detached spine. Interior pages show typical toning, scattered foxing, and occasional thumb-soiling consistent with age and use. Bindings are shaken or loose in several instances. Hand-coloring has been applied to one title page by a previous owner.
