Description
This is a large, hand-carved storage chest crafted from teak wood, likely originating from Southeast Asia, specifically in the Javanese or Peranakan style. The chest features elaborate high-relief carving on the lid and all exterior side panels, depicting traditional foliate scrolls and floral motifs centered within large lozenge or diamond-shaped frames. The piece is of rectangular box construction with a hinged lift-top lid and rests on four simple block feet. The interior is fitted with a removable, full-width wooden tray partitioned into five smaller compartments or tills for organizing smaller items. Construction details include simple iron strap hinges mounted to the exterior back and an iron chain lid stay inside. A single keyhole is centered on the front panel, though it lacks an ornamental escutcheon. The primary wood is teak, distinguished by its warm reddish-brown hue and prominent straight grain. No maker marks, labels, or inscriptions were found.
Condition report:
The chest is in fair condition with visible signs of age and utility wear. There is a significant area of wood loss and chipping to the carved foliate design on the lid, along with minor chips and softening to the carved edges across all surfaces. The exterior shows overall scuffing, scratches, and areas of finish loss and staining. Structurally, there are minor grain separations and splits in the wood panels, particularly on the interior base. The interior iron chain lid stay is broken and has been repaired using a piece of red plastic-coated wire. A small hole is present in the bottom panel.
