Description
This woodblock print, titled Seagulls, is by Japanese artist Masaharu Aoyama (1893-1969). The composition features three seagulls in flight above a stylized surface of rippling water. The work is executed in a palette of black, gray, and pale blue-gray. A square red artist seal is present in the lower left corner of the image area. The print is housed behind a wide cream-colored mat in a simple black-painted wooden frame. The reverse is sealed with a cardboard backing and silver-toned tape with a hanging wire attached.
Overall framed dimensions: 17 x 22.5 inches
Visible image area: approximately 11 x 15.5 inches.
Condition report:
The paper support exhibits significant overall toning and age-related browning. A pronounced mat burn line is visible around the periphery of the image area. Scattered light foxing is present on the paper and mat. The black-painted frame shows surface scuffing, scratches, and minor paint loss along the edges and corners. The print has not been examined out of the frame.
