Description
A matching pair of ovoid-shaped brass vases, likely produced by the Wan Bao Tang workshop during the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period. Each vase is decorated in high relief with a narrative scene featuring a leaping deer amidst the Three Friends of Winter (pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms), which are traditional Chinese symbols of longevity and fortitude. The upper shoulders are decorated with a register of stylized cloud scrolls, while the lower section transitions into a rhythmic wavy water border. The surface details indicate a combination of casting and manual hand-chasing to define the floral and animal elements. The underside of each vase features a raised circular seal mark in archaic seal script (zhuanshu) centered on a 卍 (wan) symbol. The mark reads 卍宝堂加造 (Wan Bao Tang Jia Zao), which translates to Made by the Wanbao Workshop.

Condition report:
The vases are in good antique condition with wear consistent with age. The metal surfaces exhibit moderate oxidation, scuffing, and minor pitting. Significant green verdigris (copper carbonate patina) is present on the interior of the rims and in the recessed areas of the bases. There are minor casting irregularities and small indentations present from the original manufacture and subsequent handling.
