Lot 20:
Description
A set of four modernist tankards crafted from Banka tin, a high-purity pewter sourced from Bangka Island, Indonesia. Each mug features a tapered cylindrical body with a wide, flared foot and is fitted with a rounded C-scroll wooden handle secured with metal mounts. The underside of each base is marked with three distinct stamps: a lozenge-shaped mark containing four stars above the words INDONESIA and HANDMADE; an incised cursive signature reading Yohanes; and a block-letter stamp reading THE BANKA TIN / FORMULA 60 / UN-TARNISH / NON-BLACK. These markings indicate the pieces were handmade using a specific pewter alloy designed to resist the dark oxidation common in traditional pewter.
Height: 4 3/4 inches
Base Diameter: 4 1/2 inches.
Condition report:
The set is in good vintage condition. The metal bodies exhibit light surface scratches, minor scuffing, and small dings consistent with age and typical use. The wooden handles show minor wear to the finish, particularly along the edges, and one handle has a visible scratch on the side.
