Lot 1:
Description
This expressionist portrait, executed in oil on hardboard, features a stylized and fragmented head rendered with heavy impasto and energetic brushwork. The artist employs a somber yet vibrant palette of deep blacks, browns, and ochres accented with bold areas of red, yellow, and green. The composition utilizes thick black outlines to define the features, a technique reminiscent of the stained-glass aesthetic popularized by Georges Rouault. Stylistically, the work bears a strong resemblance to the portraits of South African artist Carl Buchner (1921-2003). The painting is housed in a simple, mid-century style dark-stained wood frame with mitered corners. The verso reveals a textured fiberboard support. The work is signed Chan in dark pigment at the upper left corner.
11.75 x 8.75 inches (framed).
Condition report:
The paint surface appears stable but exhibits characteristic textural irregularities and some accumulated surface dirt. The dark-stained wood frame shows minor scuffing, edge wear, and light scratches consistent with age. The fiberboard support is in good condition with no visible warping or repairs.
