Description
Assorted textiles, primarily from Southeast Asian traditions, including Indonesia and Malaysia. The collection contains various garment types such as sarongs, shawls, and shoulder cloths known as slendangs. The textiles exhibit a range of traditional production techniques. Included are several wax-resist batik cloths, notably a peach-colored textile with blue and purple floral motifs and birds, and multiple dark brown and navy cloths featuring traditional parang patterns. Several pieces are woven in the style of Sumba or Timor ikat, with geometric motifs similar to lau pahudu textiles. The group features songket brocade work, including a large dark blue textile with dense gold-colored floral and foliate patterns and a smaller blue scarf with geometric gold thread motifs. One rectangular woven piece in brown and orange showcases an intricate hexagonal and stepped geometric design. A novelty green and brown plaid textile includes two attached ribbons printed with Egyptian-style motifs, figures in profile, and hieroglyphs. One beige cloth features a stylized architectural pattern. A hand-written white sticker label is attached to one blue and gold brocade scarf which reads: SLENDANGS COVER ONE SHOULDER – SCARF. Materials likely comprise a mix of cotton, silk, and synthetic fibers, with metallic threads utilized in the brocade pieces.
Condition report:
The textiles are in good vintage condition overall. Visible fraying and loose threads are present on the fringes and edges of several woven pieces, most notably the peach-colored woven scarf and the green-striped textile. All items show minor creasing consistent with long-term folding. No large tears or major stains are visible upon inspection.
