Lot 31:
Description
This Balinese hand-carved wooden sculpture is executed in the elongated, fluid style characteristic of mid-20th-century carvings from the Ubud or Mas regions. The figure is depicted with hands in anjali mudra, a traditional gesture of prayer or greeting. Aesthetic features include elongated earlobes with circular plugs and hair carved in rhythmic, parallel rows. The lower portion of the figure tapers into a long, undulating tail with stylized fin details, leading to the identification of the figure as a mermaid or celestial being. The sculpture is mounted on a carved wooden base.
Length: 26.5 inches.
Condition report:
Fair to good condition. Significant surface spotting and staining are present across the upper undulating sections. Light dust and grime are visible in the recessed areas of the carving. The structure remains sound.
