Description

Manner of Charles Meryon (French, 1821-1868). A pair of decorative panels featuring reproductions of 19th-century style architectural drawings or etchings, depicting historic European cityscapes, likely Paris. The prints are mounted onto stretched canvas supports. The central images are monochromatic topographical studies, one showing a large building complex with a central dome and formal plaza, and the other depicting a narrow street scene with a corner establishment inscribed CAFE Estaminet 2 Billards and CAFE ESTANTINE. The surrounding canvas area is treated with thick, textured, brownish-gray paint to simulate a rustic frame or mat. These are modern decorative items intended to replicate the appearance of aged 19th-century prints. Unsigned and undated.
