Description
A Maitland Smith tessellated stone four-drawer commode, constructed from two contrasting types of polished, veined stone. The primary material is a light beige marble with extensive brown and grey veining, forming the four drawers, the side panels, and the architectural base. A darker, more densely mottled brown marble frames the drawer fronts and central panels, and adorns the top edge. The drawers feature integrated, subtly shaped handles carved directly from the lighter stone. The base is designed with a frieze of recessed arches in the lighter marble, accented by darker interiors, and rests on a substantial plinth-like foot. The overall aesthetic, with its geometric form and use of contrasting, natural stone, suggests an Art Deco or 20th-century Neoclassical style.
