A mixed-media drawing by Maurice Empi (French, 1929-2023), titled ‘The Orchestra’. The artwork depicts an orchestra performing, rendered in a loose, expressive, and somewhat impressionistic style. The composition features musicians with various instruments, including drums, harp, and strings, and a conductor. It is executed with charcoal, pastel, and possibly crayon on a gold-toned paper or board. A faint, illegible signature or initial is visible in the upper right quadrant of the image. The piece is presented under glass, matted in a dark color, and set in a dark-stained wooden frame with an ornate, gilded inner border showing a foliate pattern.
Condition report:
The artwork appears to be in good condition. The frame exhibits minor wear, including some chipping and loss to the gilding and gesso along its edges and corners.
