Description
A Maitland-Smith Egyptian Revival sphinx candlestick, crafted in a decorative figural style. It features a dark patinated metal sphinx with a human head adorned with a nemes-like headdress, wings, and a leonine body, supporting a fluted column that culminates in a shallow, bowl-shaped receptacle. The sphinx figure rests on a rectangular metal plinth, which is further mounted on a stepped, rectangular base of dark veined stone, likely marble. The underside of the base is covered with brown felt and bears two labels: an oval sticker stating “Made in Philippines” and a rectangular sticker reading “MAITLAND SMITH, ” along with an inventory number “1033-001.”
