Description

A collection of three porcelain plates from the ‘Russian Legends’ series and a porcelain lidded box from Ardleigh Elliott & Sons. The plates are decorative, featuring intricate hand-painted designs in the traditional Russian lacquer miniature style, characterized by rich polychrome imagery and extensive gold accents on a dark ground. The reverse of one plate is marked in Cyrillic, stating it depicts “Tsar Saltan and the Three Maidens,” was “created from a plate, painted by a Palekh master in the traditions of Russian lacquer miniature,” from a “museum collection of Lyubim Maxim” with an “LM” monogram, and numbered “72/2.” This plate is explicitly labeled in English as an “Art object, not for food use” due to potentially toxic precious metal pigments. The rectangular lidded box, possibly a musical box, features scenes from “The Nutcracker” ballet by artist Natalya Zaitseva. It is identified as the first release in the “Russian Ballet” collectible series, issued in 1991 by Ardleigh Elliott & Sons to commemorate the ballet’s 100th anniversary and is numbered “7176 K.” Its interior is lined in red velvet and it rests on a gilt metal base.
